Negeri Sembilan

One of the 13 states that form the Federation of Malaysia, Negeri Sembilan is probably the most unique and versatile. Blessed with lush, green fertile valleys and densely forested hills, Negeri Sembilan offers a fabulous variety of attractions to a broad spectrum of visitors.

For those who wish to enjoy a seaside vacation, Port Dickson offers sun, fun and sea as well as economical and international class vacations. For the cultural minded, Negeri Sembilan is rich in culture, customs and traditions.

The people of the state practice a unique matrilineal culture known as 'Adat Perpatih' which was brought down bytheir ancestors of Minangkabau heritage from the highlands of West Sumatra. This heritage is evident in the Minangkabau-style houses found in the hinterlands of the state.

For nature lovers, the pristine forests offer a fascinating array of flora and fauna, while the state capital Seremban is a veritable shopping and food haven. In fact, Negeri Sembilan has it all. However, the following nine factors are reason enough to visit the state!

Malaysia Map. Negeri SembilanLOCATION

Negeri Sembilan translated literally means "Nine States," so named because it comprises a federation of nine states. It is located on the south-west corner of Peninsular Malaysia and encompasses an area of 6,645 sq km including a 48-km gentle coastline. Seremban, the capital of Negeri Sembilan, is 64 km south of Kuala Lumpur.

Negeri Sembilan is noted for its Minangkabau-styled architecture, reflecting the influence of the State's first inhabitants from Sumatra.

SEREMBAN

Seremban, the capital of Negeri Sembilan with some 160,000 inhabitants, lies in a mountainous region. A few of its public buildings reveal the characteristics traits of Minangkabau architecture, recognizable bysteep, pointed, curving roof gables, but otherwise it has little in the way of sights to support active tourism.

Descendants of the Minangkabau settlers keep their Islamic cultural heritage alive in more ways than architecture. Traditionally a matrilineal society, they preserve this aspect to this day; property passes from mother to daughter. In families who strictly observe the adat, traditional law which survives from preIslamic times, a bride doesn't move in with her husband when she marries, but rather brings him into her family's home as a guest.

The architecture of the Masjid Negeri, constructed in 1967, is highly symbolic. Its nine columns and nine suspended roofs represent the state's political structure. The mosque is near the Lake Gardens, or Taman Bunga, in the city center. The park with its two lakes is often a venue for sports and cultural events. Nearby, the State Secretariat is a gleaming, colonial-style building.

PORT DICKSON

Port Dickson, the playground resort in Negeri Sembilan, is thirty-four kilometers from the state capital of Seremban and about an hour and a half from Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur. It has miles of fine sandy beaches fringed byCasuarinas, palms, and the intricate, above-ground root formations of the Banyan tree. The road to Port Dickson hugs the Malaysian coastline, making impromptu rest and swim stops almost impossible to resist. Vendors along the road offer thirst-quenching drinks of coconut water and sugar-cane juice.

A complete menu of leisure activities is available in Port Dickson, including water-skiing, canoeing, snorkeling, windsurfing, and sailing, all of which can easily be handled through the reception desk at your hotel.

Despite Port Dickson's reputation as an area firmly focused on beach resort activity, the sights and history of the surrounding area are well worth experiencing. At Kota Lukut, a mere seven km from Port Dickson, stands the fort of Raja Jumaat, a renowned nineteenth-century Bugis warrior. The fort was built in 1847 to control the lucrative tin trade in the area. Another rewarding site is the lighthouse at Cape Rachardo, built bythe Portuguese in the 16th century in order to guide ships to the safety of Malacca's harbor. The lighthouse is still functioning today, and visitors can ascend its narrow spiral stair to the beacon, which offers a magnificent view of the coastline of Sumatra. The Cape is also a popular stopover point for migratory birds. From September to March, flocks of sparrows, honey buzzards, and swifts can be seen here, together with birds of prey, such as hawks and eagles.

Twenty-three kilometers south of the lighthouse, on the road to Malacca, sits the small and mysterious village of Pengkalan Kempas. The village houses the enigmatic 15th-century tomb of Sheikh Ahmad Majnun, whose epitaph explains that he fell while fighting to save a now unknown woman referred to simply as "the princess." It is home to a more prominent mystery as well, however. Beside the tomb stand three megaliths, elaborately carved, of unknown origin and use. As if to seal the reputation of this hamlet of the unknown, there is also in Pengalen Kempas an "ordeal stone." This ancient lie-detector, through which a person would put his arm when answering questions, allegedly reacts to an untruth byclosing upon the liar's fist. Whether or not this story is true makes for an interesting dare.

Getting there:
Take the Kuala Lumpur - Seremban bus, then the Seremban - Port Dickson bus.

HISTORY
Port Dickson was also known as Tanjung. Tin ore was abundant in Lukut during the 1820's, attracted the Chinese immigrants. Port Dickson and Pulau Arang were founded bySir John Frederick in 1889. It was a highly potential area to be a harbour, which later on developed into a busy trading centre. Railways were built for easier transportation. Even though there are vast development happening in Port Dickson, it's beautiful beaches are still well conserved.
