Gunong Ledang Resort

The Park : Gunung Ledang

Climbers will certainly find the mountain a refreshing challenge and a test of stamina. There is plenty to explore on the way to the summit - shaped like the bow of a ship! Almost every bend of the trail reveals something new.

There are two main routes up the mountain, one from Asahan and the other Sagil. Each one traverses a variety of terrain - pine forest, open spaces, up steep rocky faces, across sparkling streams and gushing waterfalls - and they all come to rest at pit-stops bearing such colourful names as Lembah Majapahit, Gua Kambing and Bukit Botak.

After a long day, the plateau - like the summit offers a hard trek, nothing quite matches the exhilaration of standing on the peak; on a clear breath-taking view of the Straits of Malacca and even the coast of Sumatera. At Gunung Ledang, you lose all sense of time. You'll appreciate that sublime feeling of being one with nature, in all its raw splendour. And be warned - you too will feel that yearning to return someday.

FACILITIES

The park headquarters and its surrounds are known as Taman Hutan Lagenda. This is located at the foot of the mountain in Sagil. The park HQ offers accommodation for trekkers and facilities for students or corporate groups wishing to run training programmes. Prior booking is necessary.

This gracious building is set on a ground that has been beautifully landscaped with a host of Malaysian ornamental plants. Architecturally, the building is reminiscent of an old Malay palace. It currently houses the park office, an air-conditioned hall, a souvenir shop, a dining area and a very pleasant veranda overlooking Sungai Air Putih.

There are 10 units of family chalets. Features air-conditioned rooms, a sitting area, kitchenette and most of the creature comforts minus television. The chalets are ideal for family or group outings where comfort is a priority.

These are basic, with just a sleeping platform to lie down on. A sleeping bag will be handy to ensure a comfortable night’s rest. Common shower and toilet facilities and a cooking area are located nearby.

The dormitory can accommodate up to 100 pax, with separate wings for men and women. It includes prayer rooms, shower and toilet facilities. It is ideal for budget travelers and student groups.

These are dotted around Taman Hutan Lagenda and at several scenic spots beside Sungai Air Putih. They are ideal places for some quiet relaxation and contemplation, or small group discussions.

There is a separate praying room available to the Muslims.

ACTIVITIES

No mountain climber in the country can seriously claim to be one until he/she has had a go at Gunung Ledang. Other than pitting your skills against the slopes, there are a few activities worth enquiring about. Naturally, the challenge of climbing the mountain is what lures most visitors to Gunung Ledang. That aside, this mountain has plenty to offer the recreational visitor. Here's a sample of activities worth considering

Location Map

From Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, the Resort is just about 2 hours drive on the North-South Expressway to

Tangkak Town and then a short drive to Sagil. You'll hardly miss your way, just follow the mountain. Accessible

bytrain to Segamat where transfer to the Park can be arranged.

THE LEGEND

Gunung Ledang, also known as Mount Ophir, is said to be the home of the legendary Princess 'Puteri Gunung

Ledang' once wooed bythe Sultan of Melaka (Malacca). The Sultan wanted to marry her but she set

impossible conditions for him. She asked him to build a golden bridge and a silver bridge linking his palace in

Melaka to the mountain. The princess also asked the Sultan to bring her seven jars of virgin’s tears, seven trays

of the hearts of mosquitoes and a bowl containing the blood of the Sultan’s son, all of which the Sultan could not

fulfill!

Legend has it that the princess eventually married one Nakhoda Ragam, a hero whose name unfailingly struck

terror into the hearts of those who had dared to oppose him. However, this hero was later to die at the hands

of his princess-wife. Ragam was fond of tickling the Princess’s ribs. One day, in an uncontrollable burst of

anger, the Princess stabbed her husband in the breast with a needle she was handling. Thereafter, the

Princess returned to Mount Ophir and vowed never to set her eyes on another man. Ragam’s boat, not long

after, was crushed during a storm and legend has it that the debris of the wreck was transformed into the

present six islands off Malacca. It was claimed that the boat’s kitchen became Pulau Hanyut, the cake-tray

Pulau Nangka, the water-jar Pulau Undan, the incense-burner Pulau Serimbun, the hen-coop Pulau Burong,

and the honeymoon cabin of Ragam and the Princess became Pulau Besar.

Ancient history points to the mountain being the site of rich gold deposits, luring traders from as far as

Greece and China. The name ‘Ophir’ itself is thought to have originated from the Hebrew language. In the 14th

Century, the Chinese seafarers plying the Straits of Melaka called it ‘Kim Sua’ meaning the ‘Golden

Mountain’. The Javanese during the period of the Majapahit empire named it ‘Gunong Ledang’, which means

 ‘mount from afar’.

Mt Ophir summit view
The view from the summit of Gunung Ledang (30 Nov 2001)

Gunung Ledang or Mt Ophir, is one of the most popular treks in Peninsular Malaysia. Hundreds of people flock to the mountain and its lower river during weekends. The most popular trek is via Sagil. There is also a legend of a fairy princess who is guarding the mountain. In fact, there are rumours of people sighting the princess while they are trekking in the mountain. For this reason, I would advise trekkers not to bring any pork up the mountain, after all, it is better to be safe than sorry…

There are many reasons that make this mountain so popular both to the locals and to Singaporeans. Situated in the state of Johor and at the height of 1276m, it is both near enough to Singapore and high enough to give one a reasonable sense of achievement. The obstacles found along the way to the summit also make the trek more interesting. With the development of a resort and the accessibility of the mountain via Sagil, there are adequate support in the form of guides and emergency arrangements to make this mountain one of the safest in Peninsula Malaysia.

However, all this popularity comes at a cost. This mountain is infamous for the hills of rubbish that piled up at the main campsite and for those who had not been to the mountain, the litters on the ground would show you the way. At last, the management of the mountain finally took some action and starts to clean up the mountain as well as impose a garbage deposit to ensure that things brought up to the mountain are taken down at the end of the day. Of course, this also comes at a price. Where it used to be free, it now costs RM10 to per adult to climb up the mountain.

Although this mountain is safe, one cannot afford to be complacent. There are occasion reports of incidence where trekkers fell down the waterfall, sustained injuries at the harder part of the climb or even struck bylightning especially at Botak hill. Theft is also common at the square pool, which is the most popular campsite, when trekkers leave their things unguarded.

Gunung Ledang steep slope

The wildlife there can be quite menacing. On Botak hill, rats would terrorize any campers who are having dinner on that hill. They can be quite bold and run through your feet when you are cooking. At the campsite 2 beside Sungei Segi Tua, I had seen mammals that look like porcupines (same size and armed with spikes), which are drawn to our dinner in the late evening. Pots and pans had to be thoroughly washed or else, had to be hung out of their reach or they may drag it away into the forest to enjoy the leftovers.

Mt Ophir is still a recommended trek for beginners to Malaysia’s mountains. The cost of the trek is relatively cheap compared to other mountains in Peninsula Malaysia and it is also very close to help if it is needed. The summit of the mountain also offers 360 degrees view of the surrounding although sometimes, mists and clouds can cover any scenery from the top. With proper care and attention, this can still be a nice trek if you do not really mind the litters (it was worse) and the crowd during weekends and public holiday.
